The Purple Onion 2.1.14

Whenever I enter The Purple Onion I feel warm and comfortable.   The exposed brick walls are a beautiful backdrop to the ever changing local artwork.    I find myself checking the walls to see what pieces are new and what has gone home with someone.     Their patio, winterized right now is also warm and inviting.    We are looking forward to going back when the weather breaks and everything begins to bloom.

The restaurant is known for consistently high quality food, and nice selection of beer & wine.    I appreciate nightly specials; it shows me that the chef puts a lot of thought and work into their offerings.   

We visited Purple Onion on Saturday evening.   We were treated to the music of “One Leg Up” a Gypsy Jazz band.    I look forward to seeing them again, it was so lovely.    We began our meal with the lightest fried oysters, hand battered in corn meal.    I chose a house Cabernet, Husband a Bell’s Two Hearted Ale and The Boy iced tea.

I ordered the Risotto special- Scallop Risotto with zucchini ribbons.    Very warm, creamy and tasty.    Husband ordered the Roasted Rib-Eye special.  The steak was served with a wild mushroom cream sauce and glazed carrots on a bed of mashed potatoes.   It must have been good I was never offered a bite.   The boy ordered a bowl of mussels in wine broth with tomatoes and leeks served with a grilled focaccia.    He’s a pretty picky eater so it’s a good sign that these disappeared very quickly and completely.

This evening they had a flourless chocolate Decadence.    This was really good and rich, we shared it so it was the perfect amount.

The service was great.   We always and had drinks and our food came out in a timely manner and was nice and hot.

    If you haven’t tried the crab dip you are missing out…truly one of the best…if not best items on the menu. Also have to recommend the Greek salad…the artichokes are an interesting touch to this item!
